Release Notes for STM on HP-UX 11i v3 (March 2009)

This release notes discuss the HP-UX 11i v3 (March 2009) release of the Support Tools Manager (STM).

Note: On the HP-UX 11i v3 operating system, Online Diagnostics does not support tape drives. Although some of the Support Tools Manager (STM) tools may work with tape drives, they are not supported. The diagnostic tools and utilities that support these devices are HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools (L and TT). These tools are available at:

Overview

The Support Tools Manager (STM) provides a set of online support tools for the HP-UX system, enabling you to verify and troubleshoot system hardware, and to examine system logs.

STM offers several tool types, including Information tools, Verifiers, Exercisers, Expert tools, Firmware Update tools, Diagnostics and Utilities.

Installation Requirement

Following are the installation requirements for the HP-UX 11i v3 March 2009 release:
March 2009 release onwards, SysFaultMgmt and OnlineDiag products have placed a pre-requisite on ProviderSvcsBase product. SysFaultMgmt no longer has a pre-requisite on OnlineDiag product.
As a part of stand-alone install, ProviderSvcsBase does not install in the following scenarios.

If OnlineDiag September 2008 or an earlier version is installed or selected as part of installation.
If SysFaultMgmt September 2008 or an earlier version is installed or selected as part of installation.

This implies that an install or an upgrade to SysFaultMgmt March 2009 version or later would require an upgrade of OnlineDiag March 2009 version or later and vice versa to ensure that both the products remain fully functional.

Defect Fixes

This section describes the defect fixes and changes made to STM for the current release.

The following information applies to both Itanium Processor Family (IPF) and PA-RISC systems:

stored in the string was hexadecimal value. A string conversion stored in the string was hexadecimal value. A string conversion built-in function atoi did not convert alphabet into a decimal value. Therefore, atoiwas replaced with strtolin order to convert hexadecimal to integer value and display correct processor speed. This has been fixed.

cstm takes longer time to build the map when the following model(s) are attached to the system:
- HITACHIOPEN-V
- HITACHIDISK-SUBSYSTEM
- HITACHIOPEN-V-CM
- NEC iStorage

Known Problems and Workarounds

Symptom: The following error message is displayed in the api.log file for all the monitors :
Log Level: Error
The monitor cannot determine the port number of diaglogd to communicate for registration.

Possible Causes: The following are the possible causes for this error:
- diaglogd is not running on the system.
- All the monitors experience the same problem till diaglogd is successfully launched. diaglogd failure messages will be logged only once for all the monitors.
Recommended Action: Shutdown and restart diaglogd using STM. On successful registration of the monitor, a message will be logged indicating the fact.

Problem: When the /var/psb/oselogs/ directory contains no log, it means no error is reported by the oserrlogd daemon, the diaglogd will wait for an error to be generated. So the monitors will be able to register with diaglogd until the first error is reported by the oserrlogd.

Workaround: You can safely ignore this message.
Symptom: When OnlineDiag is Installed on Non-IPMI Machines, the following error message is logged in the swagent.log file:
Running "configure" script for product "Sup-Tool-Mgr".
EMS Registrar inetd service not started. Start registrar and retry.

Problem: In the 'Sup-Tool-Mgr' product, configure script outputs an unformatted (uncaptured) EMS message. It happens during the ignite of OE bundles, because EMS is not running at the time the install happens.

Workaround: You can safely ignore this message. It is harmless; it does not indicate a problem with the installation.

Obsolescence

NOTE: Starting with HP-UX 11i v3 March 2009 release, OnlineDiag (including STM) will be in support mode. Moving forward, no new enhancements will be made to OnlineDiag (including STM). Only Critical / Serious defects will be analyzed.
